Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports suggesting he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race.
The clarification follows a publication’s allegation that Jonathan had stepped aside to avoid disrupting political unity in the South. However, his cousin, Azibaola Robert, dismissed the report on Friday, describing it as completely false.
Robert stated that the former president has never declared he would not contest in the election. Although Jonathan has not yet officially announced his candidacy, there are strong indications that he has been holding nationwide consultations.
Jonathan’s camp also emphasized that no aide has been authorised to speak on his behalf regarding the 2027 elections, insisting that the sources of the earlier report were fabricated.
According to Robert, those discouraging Jonathan from running are doing so to protect their own political interests.
He maintained that the former president has not ruled himself out of the race and will make his decision public at the appropriate time.
