The Nigerian government has appointed fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol, while also slashing his six-month flight ban to just one month.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced the decision in a statement posted on X Wednesday, explaining that it followed KWAM 1’s show of remorse over his conduct during a ValueJet incident.
“In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward,” Keyamo said.
He added that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority will withdraw the criminal complaints previously filed against the singer with the police.
Keyamo stressed that the move is part of broader efforts to resolve high-profile passenger misconduct cases on compassionate grounds, while maintaining that the government remains committed to aviation safety and security.
The decision stems from an August 5 incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, where KWAM 1 allegedly refused to hand over a flask a flight attendant suspected contained alcohol, claiming it held prescribed medication. The disagreement escalated, with the singer attempting to block the aircraft from taking off and moving dangerously close to its wing — a breach of aviation safety rules.
Initially, he was banned from boarding both domestic and international flights from any Nigerian airport for six months.
