The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labour Day.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday, the Mission said, “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of the U.S. Labour Day.”
The closure, according to the Mission, is part of a long-standing tradition honoring the contributions of American workers, first proposed in 1882 by Matthew Maguire.
While essential services will remain available through emergency contact channels, routine consular services are expected to resume immediately after the holiday. Nigerians seeking visas or consular assistance have been advised to plan their visits accordingly.
Labour Day, a federal holiday in the United States, is observed annually on the first Monday in September.
