NFL Bans Smelling Salts for 2025 Season in Player Safety Move

The NFL has officially banned the use of smelling salts and all forms of ammonia inhalants during games, effective from the 2025 season.

This decision is part of the league’s ongoing commitment to player health and safety, particularly regarding head injuries and neurological risks.

Smelling salts, which contain ammonia and stimulate breathing by irritating the mucous membranes, have long been used by players to regain focus or alertness.

However, growing concerns among medical professionals about their potential link to concussions, disorientation, and long-term cognitive effects led to the ban.

The new rule will prohibit the distribution and use of smelling salts on the sidelines, in locker rooms, and in any in-game scenario.

Teams and players found violating the policy may face disciplinary action, including fines or other penalties.

This move is part of the NFL’s broader efforts to modernize player treatment protocols, reduce reliance on substances with controversy, and prioritize science-based recovery methods.

Medical staff across the league are expected to receive updated guidelines ahead of the preseason to ensure compliance.
