The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has pledged to step into the ongoing face-off between Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, and the Nigerian government.
The monarch assured that he would prevail on the government to remove Igboho’s name from the wanted list.
Igboho was declared wanted in July 2021 after the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his Ibadan residence, where a stockpile of arms was reportedly discovered.
Recently, the agitator appealed to the Ooni to intervene on his behalf. In response, the monarch not only promised to help but also revealed that he had forgiven Igboho for previously insulting him.
Speaking at his palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, over the weekend, the Ooni expressed gratitude to God for preserving Igboho’s life despite his ordeals.
He said:
“I am not angry with you because I am the father of all. You are a brave man and our pride in Yorubaland, and you will not die young.
“We are going to ensure that your name is removed from the wanted list. Ile-Ife is the source of the universe, and no one wants peace and the development of Yorubaland more than I do.”
The monarch’s intervention has sparked discussions among observers, many of whom see it as a potential step toward reconciliation between the activist and the authorities.
