Merseyside Police have confirmed the arrest of a 47-year-old Liverpool man after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during Friday’s Premier League opener at Anfield.
The match was briefly halted when the player alerted the referee to the incident. The suspect was quickly identified, removed from the stadium, and later detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
Semenyo has since expressed gratitude to his teammates, Liverpool players, officials, and supporters for their swift response.
Under UK law, racially or religiously aggravated offences carry tougher penalties, with convictions punishable by up to two years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
