Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has opened up about her inspiring journey, revealing how God’s grace has shaped her life and career.
Speaking on The Nancy Isime Show, Veekee reflected on her humble beginnings, growing up in Ajegunle, and losing her father at the age of five. She explained that her story is a constant reminder of how far she has come despite life’s challenges.
“The reason I told that story at the event where I went to speak publicly was because of the content that my husband and I posted on social media,” Veekee shared.
She recalled the backlash she received after posting the video, with some critics suggesting she had “tainted” her brand.
“The comments I got, I saw people on Twitter saying stuff like, ‘So you built your brand for five years, making dresses for people with money and class. And then you just go and taint that class with that kind of classless video.’”
But instead of letting the criticism get to her, Veekee said it only reminded her of her journey.
“It just brought me back to the fact that if it were by human power, I would not be where I am today. I’m here because God made it possible. I was just a girl who grew up without a father from the age of five. I had to walk my way up here.”
The designer stressed that she will never deny her background or pretend to be someone else just to meet societal expectations.
“We’re here because we started from somewhere. I cannot change and try to be the girl who didn’t grow up in Ajegunle just to fit into that class people want me to be. I’m never going to be that person. I’m always going to be me, and that’s why I’m Veekee James — I’m not any other fashion designer.”
