Atletico Madrid dismantled city rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in a dramatic first derby of the season, with Julian Alvarez netting twice to steal the spotlight from Kylian Mbappe at the Metropolitano.
The night began with Robin Le Normand heading Atleti into the lead, only for Madrid to rally. Mbappe slotted home from Arda Guler’s clever assist before the teenager himself finished neatly to put Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead.
But Madrid’s defensive line collapsed under relentless pressure. Alexander Sorloth punished indecision between Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao with a powerful header to level on the stroke of half-time.
The second half belonged entirely to Simeone’s men. After Guler’s high boot conceded a penalty, Alvarez coolly converted to restore Atletico’s advantage, before producing a stunning free-kick that dipped over the wall for his second of the night.
Antoine Griezmann applied the finishing touch in stoppage time with a clinical low strike, sealing a famous win and exposing Real’s glaring defensive frailties.
