The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that a Delta Air Lines flight DL055, originally scheduled to fly from Lagos to Atlanta on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, was diverted to Accra, Ghana, following a fire incident in the aircraft’s oven.
According to NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the fire was contained, but the diversion became necessary for safety reasons.
“By the time the issue was resolved, the flight crew had exceeded their rest time limits, making it impossible to continue,” Achimugu explained in a statement on X.
Following the incident, Delta Airlines rebooked some affected passengers on its Accra–New York flight the same evening, while others were accommodated on subsequent flights. Flight DL055 eventually departed from Accra on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at around 12:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, Delta’s Atlanta–Lagos service scheduled for September 25 was cancelled. Achimugu clarified that although passengers had been informed ahead of time, those who still showed up at the airport were accommodated with hotel transfers.
To manage the disruption, 23 passengers were rebooked on Air France, while others were rerouted via British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa. The remaining travelers are expected to leave Lagos on Delta’s next scheduled flight on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:40 hrs.
He also dismissed reports of an Air France flight cancellation, stressing that the service would operate as scheduled at 01:30 hrs.
