Atletico, however, fought back through Marcos Llorente, who struck twice to silence Anfield and rekindle memories of his decisive brace in the Spanish side’s 3-2 win at the same ground five years ago.
But just when it looked like history would repeat itself, Van Dijk rose highest in the 92nd minute to power home the winner. The goal sparked wild celebrations — and tensions — as Simeone was shown a red card after a heated exchange with supporters.
The Argentine coach appeared to call for one fan’s removal before being dismissed by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani.
Liverpool’s victory means they have now won all five of their opening Premier League and Champions League fixtures this season with goals scored after the 80th minute.
Meanwhile, record signing Alexander Isak made his Liverpool debut following his £125 million ($170 million) move from Newcastle, though Salah stole the spotlight on the night.
