Emeka Ugwuonye Reacts to May Yul-Edochie’s Cease-and-Desist Notice

Emeka Ugwuonye, the former counsel of May Yul-Edochie, has responded to the cease-and-desist letter issued against him by May, the estranged wife of Nollywood actor Yul Edochie.

May had accused Ugwuonye of cyberbullying, defamation, and sharing private information from their past professional relationship. The notice, sent through her lawyers, Graylaw Partners, demanded that he retract his statements, issue a public apology, and pay ₦1 billion in damages.

Reacting via a statement shared on social media, Ugwuonye alleged that May’s decision to publicize the case was a deliberate attempt to incite her fans to troll him. He further disclosed that he is prepared to face her in court.

His statement reads

THE LAWSUIT BY MARY YUL-EDOCHIE (QUEEN MAY)

I have learned from multiple sources that Queen May has filed a lawsuit against me and shared the details on her Instagram account.

I have mixed feelings about this development. The lawsuit underscores the ongoing disagreement between us. It is quite rare for someone to sue a person who has represented them. This situation confirms a fear I’ve had: May has become profoundly misguided regarding everything that has transpired in her life over the past three years. She seems to have lost control, making it difficult for her to accept advice. I believe that this lawsuit stems from frustration and desperation.

Despite this, I am actually pleased about the lawsuit. It provides an opportunity to shed light on the truth of these events. In fact, I have already purchased my ticket to Nigeria to address the situation. Once I receive a copy of the lawsuit, I will prepare a comprehensive response.

It is clear that May’s decision to publicize the lawsuit on social media was a calculated move to incite further trolling. I understand her tactics; this mirrors her earlier choice to publish our letter to Sarah Martins online. I want to make it clear: I was not the first to take the lawsuit to social media. With her case against Yul and Judy not progressing as she had hoped, her suit against me has become the new focus for her and her supporters to create an ongoing social media spectacle. As I have mentioned before, I will not back down in the face of social media trolls.

Thank you.”
