Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday, held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
Confirming the visit in a post via his official X handle, Obi described Jonathan as his “elder brother, statesman, and leader,” noting that their conversation focused on Nigeria’s current challenges.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.
Though the details of their discussions were not disclosed, the meeting comes at a time when debates around Nigeria’s political direction and governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration continue to intensify.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s leader between 2010 and 2015, has in recent years carved a niche as a respected mediator in peacebuilding and democratic processes across Africa.
Obi, meanwhile, has remained active in national discourse, engaging stakeholders following his strong performance in the 2023 elections where he finished third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
