Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has vowed that his team will not abandon their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their shaky position in the standings.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes suffered another blow on Tuesday night after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein. The result leaves the three-time African champions stuck in third place in Group B with 11 points from eight matches.
To stand a chance of making it to the global showpiece, the Eagles must win their final two fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
Speaking after the game, Chelle admitted the situation is tough but insisted his players will keep fighting.
“My players are professionals and I know they will still want to win the remaining two games. A lot can happen over the next one month. But before that, we will have to analyse our performance tonight, which will not be easy,” he said.
The Eagles will face Lesotho away when the qualifiers resume next month, before closing their campaign at home against the Squirrels of Benin Republic.
