The Weeknd’s global smash hit, Blinding Lights, has made history by becoming the first song ever to surpass five billion streams on Spotify.
Executives at the streaming platform announced the milestone on Sunday through Instagram. “On August 31st, 2025, The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights became the first song to reach 5 billion streams on Spotify,” the post read, accompanied by a photo of the Canadian star.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, reshared the announcement on his Instagram Stories to his 78 million followers but did not add further comments.
Released in 2019 as the second single from his 2020 album After Hours, Blinding Lights was praised for its synth-pop and new wave influences. It went on to become the most-streamed track in Spotify’s history, cementing The Weeknd’s dominance in the streaming era.
Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You and Starboy, The Weeknd’s collaboration with Daft Punk, round out the platform’s top three most-streamed songs.
Back in January 2024, the singer celebrated when Blinding Lights crossed the four billion mark. At the time, he told Billboard: “I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people let alone billions! I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.”
