Trump Threatens $15bn Lawsuit Against New York Times Over “Defamation”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to sue The New York Times for $15 billion, accusing the newspaper of defamation and libel.

“The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday.

He criticized the paper’s endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, calling the publication a “mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.” Trump said the suit would be filed in Florida, a Republican stronghold.

The former president also accused media outlets of engaging in “a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration” to smear his image.

This is not Trump’s first legal clash with the Times. In 2023, a judge dismissed a lawsuit he filed against the paper, ruling that his claims “fail as a matter of constitutional law.”

The New York Times has not yet issued a response to the latest threat.
