Pop legend Madonna has revealed how spirituality has shaped her life and career, calling it the true foundation of her success.
In her first-ever podcast interview on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the 66-year-old superstar opened up about her spiritual journey, which began in 1996 after the birth of her first child, Lourdes, now 28.
“You need to be spiritual to be successful. Success is having a spiritual life, period. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have one,” Madonna said.
The “Like a Prayer” hitmaker explained that her discovery of Kabbalah, a mystical Jewish tradition, gave her a new perspective on life and guided her personal and professional decisions. For her, success is defined not by fame or wealth, but by what she does for others.
“The greatest amount of light is where there’s darkness, and you can reveal the most amount of light. When you’re in a dark room, you turn on the light. When you’re in a room that’s already light, there’s no effort made. So should we look for darkness?” she reflected.
Madonna described her “soul’s purpose” as bringing light into the world through her actions, emphasizing that she wants “it all for the sake of sharing.”
Looking back on her decades-long career, the Queen of Pop admitted that she once struggled under the weight of public opinion.
“I was a slave or victim of other people’s opinions of me. I don’t fit in, and not fitting in is what saves you,” she said.
She also credited spirituality with giving her strength during life’s toughest challenges.
“Spiritual wisdom is not helpful when everything’s going your way. It’s helpful when you’re challenged and when you’re happy,” she noted.
