Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has cleared the air regarding viral reports claiming he was heartbroken by a young female student, describing the rumour as a complete misinterpretation of his words.
In a recent interview with Punch, the seasoned actor explained that people twisted his motivational message into gossip.
“Nobody broke my heart; nobody can break my heart. I can only get disappointed,” Odule stated. “That disappointment can come from anyone — a friend, family member, or even my child. But heartbreak, no.”
He clarified that the viral story originated from an inspirational post, not a personal confession.
“Someone even said it was a 200-level student. I laughed. My first daughter is a lecturer with a PhD; how can a 200-level student break my heart? That would be silly,” he said. “If I were ever to be involved with a 200-level student, she would just be a passing fancy; nothing serious.”
Dele Odule criticised how social media users now twist harmless statements for attention.
“People now use social media for clout and money, even at the expense of integrity,” he said. “At a time, people claimed I had 10 children with 10 women. I simply agreed; after all, it’s not a crime in Nigeria. If it’s a sin, I’ll face it when I get to heaven.”
Speaking about his acting career, he noted that he doesn’t select roles based on preference but focuses on delivering strong performances.
“I don’t choose roles; they are chosen for me. My duty as an actor is to interpret whatever role I’m given. That’s the essence of acting,” he explained.
On managing fame and rumours, Dele Odule said experience has taught him to stay calm and not overreact.
“If what’s being said doesn’t harm my career, I simply say, ‘I’ve heard you,’” he remarked. “As long as I’m not accused of any crime, I don’t take things to heart.”
Dele Odule also addressed the issue of polygamy, describing it as a part of African culture.
“Polygamy is part of African culture. I’m not saying everyone should do it, but if a man can responsibly care for multiple wives, why not? What I frown upon is irresponsibility,” he said.
Dele Odule concluded by acknowledging that while social media has helped promote actors and their craft, it has also become a platform for misinformation.
“Fame and scandal go hand in hand; you just have to make sure your image stays clean by avoiding crime. I’m not perfect, but I try to stay upright,” he added.
