British rapper and Netflix star Ghetts, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Ilford, north-east London.
According to reports, the 41-year-old musician allegedly struck a 20-year-old man on October 18 and failed to stop at the scene. The victim was taken to hospital but tragically died on Monday, the same day Ghetts appeared before Stratford Magistrates’ Court.
Authorities have confirmed that the charge is expected to be upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving at the next court hearing.
Clarke-Samuel was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear again at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 27.
The Metropolitan Police have appealed to the public for any witnesses or information related to the crash to come forward.
Ghetts is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most influential rappers, known for his lyrical depth and contributions to grime and British hip-hop. Over the years, he has collaborated with top artists including Skepta, Stormzy, and Ed Sheeran.
He won Best Male Act at the 2021 MOBO Awards and received the MOBO Pioneer Award in 2024 for his contribution to British Black culture. Ghetts has also been nominated for a Mercury Prize for his artistic achievements.
His acclaimed 2021 album, Conflict of Interest, peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and earned extensive airplay across major radio stations including BBC Radio 1, Kiss 100, and BBC Radio 1Xtra.
In addition to his music career, Ghetts has performed multiple times at Glastonbury Festival, most recently in 2024, following earlier appearances in 2022 and 2008.
He also made his acting debut in the 2024 Netflix hit series Supacell, which further elevated his profile in the entertainment industry.
