British Rapper Ghetts Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case

British rapper and Supacell actor Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been charged with death by dangerous driving following an alleged hit-and-run incident in London.

The 41-year-old appeared before Barkingside Magistrates’ Court in Essex on Monday, where prosecutors detailed that he allegedly failed to stop after his vehicle struck 20-year-old student Yubin Tamang on Redbridge Lane in Ilford on Saturday, October 18.

Initially, Ghetts faced a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but it was upgraded to death by dangerous driving after Tamang died on October 20.

According to The Standard, prosecutor Varinder Hayre described Tamang as an only child who had been sent to the U.K. to further his education. Hayre added that the black BMW involved in the crash, registered and insured in the artist’s name, sustained significant damage, leading police to visit Ghetts’s residence the following morning.

The musician was first brought before the court on October 20 and remanded in custody. During Monday’s hearing, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address while dressed in a grey prison tracksuit.

Ghetts will remain in custody until his next court appearance at London’s Old Bailey on November 24.

The award-winning rapper, who performed at Glastonbury last year, has released five studio albums and collaborated with major artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, and Skepta. He was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2023 for his album On Purpose, with Purpose and recently appeared in Netflix’s superhero drama Supacell.
