Former West Ham United manager Graham Potter has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Swedish national football team, taking on the role on a short-term basis to help revive Sweden’s World Cup qualification hopes.
The 50-year-old Englishman will lead the Scandinavian side through the remainder of their qualification campaign, with the goal of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In his first statement following the announcement, Potter expressed both gratitude and determination.
“I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world’s best leagues during the weeks.
My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer,” he said.
Sweden began their search for a new manager following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was sacked after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on October 13 — a result that ended their hopes of automatic qualification from Group B.
Despite the setback, Sweden could still qualify for the play-offs thanks to their performance in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League, where they finished top of their group.
Potter’s appointment marks his return to management just weeks after being dismissed by West Ham at the end of September, following a poor start to the Premier League season.
The former Chelsea and Brighton boss will now be tasked with rejuvenating Sweden’s form and guiding the team back to the world stage.
