I wasn’t happy being African – Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage Denies Leaking Her S#x Tape

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has rejected claims that Afrobeats is experiencing its worst run in two decades, insisting that the genre continues to dominate globally.

Her remarks come after music executives, including Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, suggested in recent interviews and social media posts that Afrobeats was on the decline.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Tiwa Savage confidently declared that Afrobeats remains a force that cannot be silenced. She argued that far from fading, the genre is growing stronger, charting globally and filling stadiums across continents.

“Afrobeats is the fastest growing genre in the world. We kind of created it with nothing; no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people initially,” she said.

The singer reflected on how Afrobeats has transformed global perceptions of Africa, revealing that she once felt embarrassed about her heritage while growing up in London — a feeling that has since turned into pride.

“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing,” she shared.

Tiwa Savage also addressed early doubts about the genre’s longevity. “There was a conversation at one point that Afrobeats is going to have its 15 minutes of fame and then fades away. But we are still here. We are not slowing down. In fact, we are filling out stadiums, and we are getting the biggest songs on the charts right now.”

She further highlighted Africa’s immense influence, adding, “I don’t know how true this is, but apparently one in every four black persons is a Nigerian or an African. So, we are not going anywhere. As much as they are trying to quiet us down, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”
