British singer Lily Allen has opened up about checking into a residential treatment facility earlier this year after struggling with suicidal thoughts amid the collapse of her marriage to Stranger Things actor David Harbour.
The Not Fair singer, who took a break from her podcast in January, revealed in an interview with British Vogue on Friday that she voluntarily entered a U.S. facility to address her “spiralling” mental health.
“I’ve been into those places before against my will and I feel like that’s progress in itself,” lily Allen shared.
“That’s strength. I knew that the things I was feeling were too extreme to be able to manage, and I was like, ‘I need some time away.’”
When asked about what she was feeling, the 40-year-old admitted, “That I wanted to die.”
Lily Allen also confessed that the breakup made her struggles with eating worse and brought her close to a relapse after six years of sobriety.
“The feelings of despair that I was experiencing were so strong. The last time that I felt anything like that, drugs and alcohol were my way out, so it was excruciating to sit with those feelings and not use them,” she said.
To cope, Allen poured her emotions into music, writing an entire album in just 16 days in December 2024. The project reportedly features two songs inspired by her marriage and Harbour’s alleged infidelity, though she emphasized they shouldn’t be taken as “gospel.”
Reflecting on the relationship, she said,
“There were lots of good things. My kids had an amazing experience living in America for five years, and I have a lot of compassion for my ex-husband. I think we all suffer.”
Lily Allen shares two daughters, Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 12, with her first husband, Sam Cooper. Her fifth studio album, which remains untitled, is set to be released later this year.
