Pop icon Mariah Carey has finally weighed in on a rumour about the origins of her long-running feud with rapper Eminem.
Appearing on Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday, the We Belong Together singer was asked about claims that the feud began after Eminem allegedly wanted her to play his mother in his 2002 movie 8 Mile.
Host Andy Cohen put the question directly:
“This summer, a music producer claimed the real reason why you and Eminem started beefing was because he approached you about playing his mom in 8 Mile. Is there any truth to that?”
Mariah Carey admitted there was “truth” to the allegation but suggested the story wasn’t as clear-cut as told:
“From what I heard, there is truth to that. But I don’t think that he actually… well, who knows who approached who.”
When pressed if that moment sparked the feud, she sidestepped:
“Um, no. I mean, maybe. It depends on what he’s thinking. I really don’t care. Like, whatever he’s said, then I’m that, fine. Not really. But that’s a rap lyric.”
The claim was first made earlier this year by producer Damion “Damizza” Young, who said Mariah Carey didn’t take the casting suggestion well, calling it a hit to her confidence.
The Carey–Eminem feud has stretched over two decades, marked by diss tracks from both sides. Eminem has repeatedly referenced Carey in songs like Superman and Bagpipes From Baghdad, while she clapped back with tracks like Clown(2002) and Obsessed (2009). The rapper countered with The Warning, threatening to leak private calls between them.
