Media personality Daddy Freeze has shared what led to his decision to stop attending church, revealing that he felt rejected during his divorce when his pastor asked him to start sitting at the back of the church.
Speaking on the ‘With Chude’ podcast, the controversial religious critic opened up about how that experience pushed him away from the church at one of the lowest points in his life.
“Divorcees and separated women are ostracized by the church,” he said. “And I believe that’s one of the reasons why Osinachi died. The church is not going to chase you for divorcing, but are they going to allow you to be the lead singer?”
Daddy Freeze explained that divorced and separated individuals are often stigmatized within religious communities, recounting how his once-close relationship with his pastor changed after his marriage ended.
“It happened to me. I was very cool with my pastor then. When I was going through my divorce, it was one of the things that drew me away from the church. My pastor said, ‘Yeah, you can come to church, but you know you’re going to sit at the back!’”
Daddy Freeze went on to reflect on how the experience made him question the inclusivity of the church, referencing the biblical story of the woman at the well from John chapter 4.
“I’m going through a divorce and getting married to somebody else, so that means I can’t bring the person to this church again? Then I remembered John 4, the woman at the well who had had five husbands and was living with one who wasn’t her husband. That is so powerful. I’ve only divorced once.”
Known for his outspoken views on religion, Daddy Freeze clarified that his message is not one of rebellion but of compassion and authenticity, urging churches to be more understanding toward those going through personal struggles.
