PDP Postpones Screening of Aspirants Ahead of 2025 National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of its screening exercise for aspirants ahead of the 2025 Elective National Convention, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, the party attributed the delay to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Fintiri assured all aspirants and members that a new date for the screening would be announced soon, while expressing regret over any inconvenience caused by the postponement.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement.

“All aspirants and members of our Party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read.

He further reiterated the committee’s commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, and seamless convention process.

The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention is slated to hold on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

On October 25, the party had unveiled a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee, led by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, to vet aspirants contesting for various national offices. The screening was initially scheduled for October 28 before the latest postponement.

The announcement came shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman.

This development follows reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship position.

However, factions within the party — including those loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike — have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, citing insufficient consultation.

The disagreement underscores the growing tension within the PDP, which has in recent months witnessed internal divisions and high-profile resignations among its members.
