Rap icon and business mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has been sentenced to 50 months (just over four years) in federal prison after being convicted on two counts of transporting women across state lines for prostitution under the Mann Act.
The 55-year-old music executive, who faced a maximum of 20 years, was acquitted earlier this year of more serious allegations, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.
However, a New York jury found him guilty on the lesser counts following a two-month trial that drew widespread media attention.
At the sentencing hearing on Friday, prosecutors argued for a stiffer penalty, citing Combs’ lack of remorse. His defense team, however, appealed for leniency, pointing to his declining health and his efforts to mentor inmates during the 13 months he has already spent in custody.
In a handwritten letter submitted the night before sentencing, Combs expressed regret, writing that he was “deeply sorry for the hurt and pain” caused and pledged not to reoffend.
The trial included testimony from more than 30 witnesses, who described Combs’ alleged violent behavior, drug use, and coercive sexual encounters. Despite his apology, the court ruled against bail, meaning Combs will continue serving his sentence immediately.
His legal team has already confirmed that they plan to appeal the conviction, leaving open the possibility of a reduced sentence or retrial in the future.
