Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has responded to comments made by Wayne Rooney, after the Manchester United legend criticized his frequent player rotations this season.
Rooney’s remarks followed Chelsea’s 2–2 draw against Qarabag in the UEFA Champions League — a result that intensified scrutiny over Maresca’s tactical decisions.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Wolves on Saturday, Maresca defended his approach, stressing the importance of allowing young players to learn through experience.
“I’ve said many times already — we’re in an era when anyone can say what they want,” Maresca stated, as quoted by Football London.
“Since I joined the club, rotation has been part of my view. When you don’t win, nobody agrees. But when it’s Andrey Santos, Jorrel Hato, and Joao Pedro, it’s not about rotation — they’re young players who need the chance to make mistakes so they can improve.”
His comments underline his long-term vision for Chelsea, as he continues to integrate youth talent into the first team amid mixed results.
