Former Abia State Governor and federal lawmaker, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is losing sleep as he works to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security and economic challenges.
Kalu made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, where he addressed the nation’s escalating insecurity and manpower shortages within the police force.
According to him, Nigeria is critically under-policed, but the shortage is not due to a lack of effort by the Federal Government. He explained that despite recruitment advertisements, many Nigerians are reluctant to join the police.
“It’s a problem of manpower. This is a population of almost 300 million people. We are not 250 million,” he said.
Responding to criticism that the Tinubu administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are moving too slowly on their promises, Kalu insisted the government cannot compel citizens to join the police.
“No, let me tell you, we cannot force anybody to join the Nigeria Police Force.
We have advertised. Did you apply? So we are doing everything possible.”
He emphasized that President Tinubu is fully engaged in addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
“President Tinubu is having sleepless nights every day about Nigeria, and I can assure you that things will get better,” he added.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu had pledged to enhance national security with increased personnel and stronger operational capacity. However, the country is currently grappling with one of its worst security crises since 2012, with terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and killings reported daily across several states.
