Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reacted to his expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the development as nothing more than an early start to “Detty December.”
Wike’s response came through a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media. The aide dismissed the expulsion and the comments made at the PDP National Convention as the product of a celebratory atmosphere rather than serious political action.
“They went to start their own Detty December in November,” the statement read. “When people decide to start their Dirty December early, one can’t help but ignore whatever comes out of their mouths.”
The aide added that those present at the convention had gathered mainly for social enjoyment and were “free to say anything” after indulging in drinks — implying that their remarks should not be regarded as weighty or credible.
Wike, along with former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and PDP factional National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, was expelled from the party on Saturday for alleged anti-party activities. Their removal was reportedly endorsed unanimously by members present at the ongoing national convention in Ibadan, following a motion moved by a founding member of the party and seconded by a serving governor.
The convention itself was held despite multiple court orders directing the party to halt proceedings. Several PDP heavyweights, including a former Senate President, had urged the Damagum-led faction to honour the court rulings and avoid actions that could further destabilize the party.
The controversy continues to unfold as reactions trail the high-profile expulsions and the party’s decision to proceed with the convention despite judicial interventions.
