Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider his directive to withdraw police officers assigned to federal lawmakers, citing serious security concerns.

On November 23, President Tinubu ordered the immediate removal of police protection for significant personalities (VIPs) nationwide.

By November 26, several federal lawmakers raised alarms, warning that the decision exposed them to potential security risks.

Speaking on Friday at the joint sitting of the National Assembly during the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, Akpabio conveyed legislators’ concerns about their safety.

“As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some members have asked me to inform you that they may not be able to go home today because of this change,” Akpabio said. “We plead with you, Mr President, for a review of the decision.”

Earlier in his address, the Senate President formally welcomed President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to the joint session. He described the National Assembly as the foundation of Tinubu’s public service career.

Akpabio stressed the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government, dismissing claims that collaboration weakens legislative independence. According to him, budgeting is most effective when driven by constitutional partnership rather than institutional rivalry.

He also described the 2026 Appropriation Bill as a strategic roadmap for national renewal, noting that Nigeria has been undergoing a significant transition amid persistent challenges.

“Insecurity has tested our collective resolve and reminded us that peace is not a gift we inherit but a responsibility we must constantly defend,” Akpabio said.

The appeal adds to growing debates over the implications of the police withdrawal policy, particularly for the safety of public officials.
