Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi announced his defection on Wednesday, December 31, during a political engagement in Enugu State.
Speaking at the event, the former Anambra State governor said his decision to join the ADC was driven by a desire to “transform and rescue” Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi declared.
He also stressed his commitment to safeguarding the integrity of future elections, vowing that electoral malpractice would be resisted through lawful means.
“We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” he added.
Obi’s move marks a significant political realignment as opposition figures and parties continue discussions around coalition-building ahead of the next presidential race.
