Activist Harrison Gwamnishu has broken his silence after regaining freedom from police custody, two weeks after he was detained over allegations linked to the ransom raised for a kidnapped couple in Edo State.
Gwamnishu was taken in for questioning following claims that part of the ransom money had been diverted.
Social media personality Verydarkman had earlier stated that he played a role in drawing attention to the matter, alleging irregularities surrounding the funds and pushing for Gwamnishu’s arrest.
In his first public statement after his release, the activist expressed gratitude to supporters who stood by him throughout the ordeal, even before hearing his side of the story.
“For clarity, I was neither invited nor arrested by the Police,” Gwamnishu said. “As a law-abiding citizen, I voluntarily presented myself for investigation regarding the incident.”
He revealed that no formal charges have been filed against him, adding that the case remains under review by the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Gwamnishu also acknowledged his legal team for securing his release, specifically thanking Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olayiwola Afolabi, alongside Dele Igbinedion and Favour Ajuebor.
Despite his history of criticising police misconduct, the activist commended the Edo State Commissioner of Police for his professionalism. He also praised the investigation team led by CSP Osagie for their conduct during his detention.
“I sincerely appreciate every one of you,” he said, adding that he intends to personally thank those who supported him during the period.
