‘Baseless allegations’ – Malami Denies EFCC Claims of 46 Illegal Bank Accounts

EFCC Invites Former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami for Questioning

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has rejected allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he operated 46 illegal bank accounts or had links to funds looted during the regime of late military ruler, General Sani Abacha.

Reacting through his media aide, Bello Doka, Malami described the claims as false, insisting that he has no involvement in any form of financial impropriety. According to Doka, the allegations being circulated are “baseless, ridiculous and unfounded.”

He clarified that the former minister operates only six bank accounts, all of which are known to the EFCC and other relevant authorities.

“The EFCC is fully aware of the six bank accounts belonging to Malami. Claims that he operates 46 illegal bank accounts are false and misleading. For the record, the former minister has no link whatsoever to Abacha loot or any recovery funds,” Doka stated.

Doka further noted that during Malami’s invitation and questioning by the EFCC, he was never formally confronted with allegations relating to the purported 46 bank accounts.

Challenging the credibility of the claims, Doka urged the anti-graft agency to publicly reveal at least 23 of the alleged accounts, representing half of the figure being cited, if it indeed has verifiable evidence.

He called on the EFCC to either withdraw or properly clarify the allegations in the interest of transparency, stressing that media statements alone do not amount to proof of wrongdoing.
