“PDP failed to protect me” – Fubara speaks after defection to APC

PDP Names Suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara to 2025 Convention Committee

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that his departure from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was prompted by the party’s failure to protect him during the recent political crisis in the state.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the governor explained that he was compelled to seek support from the federal government after facing challenges that threatened his position and political survival.

“I went to see Mr President not just for a personal visit, but for a consultation on state matters. The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed,” he said.

According to the Daily Post, Fubara officially announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the meeting, taking along his key supporters.

He stated that the APC provided the assurance and protection necessary to navigate the political turbulence that had engulfed the state.

“If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid,” he added.

Fubara’s move marks a significant shift in Rivers State politics and is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
