President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sympathy with Nigerian-British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a fatal road accident in Ogun State that left the athlete injured and claimed the lives of two people close to him.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President disclosed that he personally reached out to Joshua by phone to commiserate with him and offer prayers after the tragic incident.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” Tinubu said.
The President also revealed that he contacted Joshua’s mother to offer comfort and spiritual support during this difficult time.
“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call,” he added.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s concern for the boxer’s well-being, Tinubu said he reached out to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was with Joshua at the hospital, to ensure that he was receiving adequate medical attention.
“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” the President stated.
It was further disclosed that Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, had earlier shared a message on his official X account, mourning the loss of lives and expressing solidarity with Joshua and his family over the accident, which reportedly occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” Tinubu wrote.
The President also urged Nigerians to support one another in times of grief.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” he said.
Tinubu concluded by praying for Joshua’s recovery and for the souls of the deceased.
“I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”
