We’re reworking cybercrime law — Senate

Senate Shifts Resumption of Plenary to October 7

Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Senator Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu, says the Senate is currently overhauling Nigeria’s National Cybercrime Law to better address insecurity and fast-evolving technology-driven offences.

Salisu disclosed this in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while speaking with journalists after the induction of new officers and vice patrons of the Abeokuta Sports Club 1904, led by its President, Alhaji Taoheed Awodele.

The senator representing Ogun Central said the National Assembly is committed to working with the government and security agencies to confront the country’s security challenges. He revealed that the Senate recently held a South-West engagement on insecurity and will replicate similar consultations across all geopolitical zones.

“As I speak with you, we are reworking a new National Cybersecurity Law. We are going to repeal the existing law and promulgate a new one,” he said. “Since the last law was enacted, technology has advanced, Artificial Intelligence has emerged, and new forms of cybercrime have surfaced. There is also a new UN Convention on Cyber Crimes.”

Salisu emphasized the growing role of technology in both crime and crime-fighting, noting that nearly every modern offence involves a digital component — from communications to financial fraud. He added that the federal government is accelerating efforts to expand digital infrastructure nationwide.

“Only when every part of the country is covered, especially with broadband, can we fully deploy technology to govern currently ungoverned spaces,” he said.

The lawmaker urged the Abeokuta Sports Club and similar organisations to contribute to leadership development by offering civic insight and guiding public discourse.

“Clubs like this should help provide clarity, distinguish long-term good from political motivations, and serve as repositories of knowledge that help shape policy,” he noted.

Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako Oyedele, also addressed the gathering, urging the club’s new leadership to focus on impact, progress, unity, and innovation. “Leadership is about leaving things better than you met them,” she said.
