Labour Party Endorses Alex Otti as National Leader, Wishes Peter Obi Well After ADC Move

The Labour Party (LP) has formally endorsed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader and extended goodwill to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This was disclosed in a communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, after a meeting of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed issues bordering on the party’s stability, growth, and future direction.

According to the communiqué, the NWC unanimously resolved to recognise Governor Otti as the party’s national leader. “The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirmed its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the statement read.

The party also addressed the exit of Peter Obi, expressing goodwill toward him in his future political pursuits. “The national leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi well in his future political endeavours and in his new political party,” the communiqué stated.

In addition, the NWC acknowledged former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the party’s National Chairman. The party said this position is consistent with the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which held that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had elapsed.

The NWC also announced that all party congresses and the forthcoming National Convention would be conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution. Members at all levels were urged to actively participate in the congress processes.
