“Count me out” – Roger Federer Rules Out Coaching Role With Carlos Alcaraz

Roger Federer Rules Out Coaching Role With Carlos Alcaraz

Tennis legend Roger Federer has made it clear that he has no intention of joining Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz’s coaching team.

Alcaraz, 22, is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in world tennis alongside Jannik Sinner, having already won six Grand Slam titles. Speculation about his next coaching move intensified in December 2025 after he ended his long-standing partnership with Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Samuel Lopez has since stepped in as Alcaraz prepares for the opening Grand Slam of the 2026 season. However, when asked if he would consider coaching the young star, Federer dismissed the idea.

“No, I’m definitely out. Maybe I could give him some advice on the periphery, but everybody knows I’m too busy with my children and with my life at the minute,” Federer told TNT.

Despite ruling himself out, Federer spoke highly of Alcaraz’s talent, suggesting the Spaniard has the ability to succeed regardless of who is in his corner, while still emphasizing the importance of guidance.

“I think he can get it with a coach, with no coach. He’s that good, obviously. But a good coach will definitely be helping,” he said.

Federer also acknowledged that the period following Ferrero’s departure could be demanding, especially under intense media scrutiny.

“It’s going to be very important for him to find the right person in his corner. To be able to hit the career Grand Slam already at such a young age is incredible, to be honest,” he added.

Looking ahead to the season, Federer identified Alcaraz, Sinner, and Novak Djokovic as the main contenders.

“Let’s see if he can do it. I think Sinner is obviously the other big favourite, and I believe Novak will have a good shot as well. I’m very excited to see what’s going to happen.”
