Manchester United have announced the sacking of Ruben Amorim, just 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford. The decision, confirmed on Monday, follows what sources describe as an irreparable breakdown in internal relations within the club.
In an official statement, United said:
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Sports journalist David Oistein reports that the decision was taken by the club’s leadership, led by Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, after growing tensions behind the scenes.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who currently coaches the Under-18s, is expected to serve as interim manager. His first assignment will be Wednesday night’s away fixture against Burnley, with a permanent managerial appointment expected to be postponed until the summer.
Amorim’s exit follows a turbulent weekend in which he clashed with the media before and after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United. In his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese coach appeared frustrated, declining to answer questions about transfers and tactical adjustments. Post-match, he emphasised that he joined United to work as a manager, not just as a head coach, further fuelling speculation over his future.
Reports indicate that growing tensions with Director of Football Jason Wilcox over unmet transfer promises contributed significantly to the decision.
Despite the upheaval, United remain in contention for European football. The club currently sits sixth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
