Tekashi 6ix9ine surrenders for three-month sentence

Controversial American rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine has surrendered to serve a three-month jail sentence following violations of his probation.

The artist, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, turned himself in at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn to commence the sentence, which stems from a plea deal tied to his federal racketeering and firearms case.

The Brooklyn facility is the only federal jail in New York City and currently houses high-profile detainees, including Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, as well as Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing health insurance executive Brian Thompson.

Hernandez’s surrender was live-streamed by his friend, popular internet personality Adin Ross, according to Rolling Stone. The nearly two-hour broadcast showed the rapper surrounded by friends as he prepared to begin his sentence. In a post shared on Instagram, Hernandez wrote, “Thank you guys so much, see you in 3 months.”

This marks the second time the rapper has been ordered back to jail. The sentence arises from two separate incidents last year while he was still under supervised release following his earlier conviction in a New York gang-related case.

In 2018, Hernandez was arrested on racketeering and firearms charges linked to his involvement with the Nine Trey Bloods gang. Initially pleading not guilty, he later entered a plea agreement in February 2019, admitting guilt to nine charges and acknowledging that he ordered a gang member to shoot at a rival.

Once a dominant figure in global music streaming in the late 2010s, Tekashi 6ix9ine has remained a frequent subject of controversy and legal trouble throughout the past decade.
