Trump Says He No Longer Feels Bound to “Think Purely of Peace” After Missing Out on Nobel Prize

US President Donald Trump has said he no longer feels obliged to prioritise peace after not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, linking the perceived snub to his continued push for control of Greenland.

In a message sent to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump criticised the country for “decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS,” and said this has changed his approach to foreign policy. He wrote that he no longer feels “an obligation to think purely of Peace,” although he added that peace would still be important, but that he can now focus on what he believes is “good and proper for the United States of America.” Trump went on to assert that “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

The message, confirmed by Prime Minister Støre and published by PBS NewsHour, came in response to earlier communications from Støre and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, who had urged a de-escalation amid tensions over Greenland. Trump’s letter also ties his long-standing claim that the US must have full control of the Arctic island to broader national security concerns — a stance that has alarmed European allies and raised diplomatic tensions.

Støre made clear in his reply that the Norwegian government itself does not decide Nobel Peace Prize winners; that responsibility lies with the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee. He reiterated Norway’s support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and emphasised support for NATO’s efforts to bolster stability in the Arctic.

Trump’s remarks have drawn international attention not only for their content, but also for the unusual context of linking major geopolitical aims — including his controversial stance on Greenland — to not receiving the prestigious peace award.
