Arsenal FC reached the League Cup final for the first time in eight years after Kai Havertz sealed a 1-0 victory over Chelsea FC in Tuesday’s semi-final second leg.

Having taken control in the first leg, Mikel Arteta’s side completed the job at the Emirates Stadium as Havertz came off the bench to strike late and send the Gunners through.

The win was cathartic for Arsenal, who had been eliminated in their previous four semi-final appearances across competitions, including the Champions League and Europa League. It also books their first final appearance in six years.

Arsenal will face either Manchester City or Newcastle United at Wembley on March 22. City currently hold a 2-0 advantage over Newcastle ahead of Wednesday’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

The North London club have not lifted the League Cup since 1993, losing their last three final appearances. Victory at Wembley would secure Arsenal’s first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup and only the second piece of silverware under Arteta since his appointment in December 2019.

The Gunners’ strong cup run has come amid an impressive campaign overall. Arsenal sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League and advanced to the Champions League last 16 after winning all eight of their group matches.

Despite the success, Arteta’s side have faced criticism over their reliance on goals from corners and set-pieces. The Arsenal manager recently defended his team’s approach, insisting many regard his side as among the most exciting in Europe.

For Chelsea, new boss Liam Rosenior suffered only his second defeat since replacing Enzo Maresca, with both losses coming against Arsenal.

Arteta will be unconcerned by criticism after guiding his team back to Wembley, with a long-awaited League Cup title now firmly in sight.
