A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the recent attack on Peter Obi in Edo State was an attempted assassination carried out by the government or its agents.
Okonkwo made the claim on Tuesday during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, while reacting to the reported gunmen attack on Obi’s convoy in Edo State.
According to him, the incident amounted to more than a random security breach.
“The attack on Peter Obi in Edo State was an attempted assassination by the government or their agents,” Okonkwo said.
He disclosed that he had been in contact with former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, who allegedly provided details surrounding the incident.
Okonkwo further referenced a previous warning reportedly issued by the current Edo State Governor, cautioning Obi against entering the state without prior clearance and stating that his security would not be guaranteed. He argued that such statements had earlier been discussed publicly as posing a potential danger to opposition figures.
The ADC chieftain added that the events occurred as supporters gathered to welcome Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He claimed the welcoming group encountered a convoy of about ten vehicles led by a pilot vehicle before the alleged attack took place.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances of the incident.
