“They threw bottles at me” – Tems speaks on early days in music career

Tems Opens Up About Past Struggles Working as a Marketer

Grammy-winning R&B star Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has opened up about one of the most difficult moments she experienced as an emerging artiste.

Speaking in an interview with Big Boy TV, the Crazy Tings crooner revealed that she was once booed off the stage during a performance at a school event.

According to the singer, she had gone into the show expecting a warm reception but was instead met with rejection.

“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to be receiving a standing ovation,” she said.

“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she recalled.

Tems explained that despite the embarrassing incident and other early setbacks, she remained committed to pursuing her music career. She noted that part of the resistance she faced may have stemmed from her decision to stay original rather than perform covers or adopt more familiar sounds like many of her peers at the time.

Looking back, the singer said she is grateful she did not compromise her style, adding that staying true to herself ultimately paid off.
