Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has compared individuals who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Wike stated that his comparison was based on Obi’s actions following the 2023 presidential election, noting that although he contested under the Labour Party, he did not remain to address internal party challenges.
Speaking during a national convention organised by his faction of the PDP on Sunday, Wike argued that such actions reflected a lack of leadership qualities.
“I liken those who defected from the PDP to the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party; they lack leadership traits,” he said.
“The former candidate of the Labour Party wanted to be president. The Labour Party gave him the platform, but when a crisis came in the Labour Party, and he was supposed to show leadership, he ran away because he could not solve problems,” he said.
Despite ongoing legal disputes, Wike’s faction proceeded with its national convention, even as a case remains before the Supreme Court regarding the Appeal Court ruling that nullified the Oyo convention organised by a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki and supported by Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde.
He has also maintained that the PDP will not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, stating instead that the party would support the second-term ambition of President Bola Tinubu, who appointed him as FCT Minister.
