Billionaire businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana, has addressed the backlash to his recent remarks in Enugu State, saying they were misunderstood.
The chairman of the Cubana Group explained that a short clip from his speech at a City Boy Movement event was taken out of context, sparking online controversy.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Igbo, he said the version circulating does not reflect what he actually intended to communicate.
“My speech was perhaps deliberately misunderstood. I did not intend to insult Ndigbo,” he said.
According to him, his message was focused on encouraging people to take part in governance and civic discussions, not on criticising or attacking any group.
Obi Cubana also noted that his involvement in political conversations is about building dialogue between citizens and government, adding that people should be free to support any candidate they believe in without fear.
He warned against narratives that could divide the Igbo community and urged people not to focus too much on a few opposing voices.
He pointed to the City Boy Movement’s activities, including a recent event in Owerri, as examples of peaceful engagement and participation in the political process.
Reaffirming his identity and loyalty, he stressed that his actions have always been in Ndigbo’s interest, both at home and abroad.
He ended by calling for unity and encouraging continued involvement in discussions around governance and development.
