“They’re Businessmen, Not Politicians” – Oyemyke Defends Igbo Businessmen Backing Tinubu for 2027

Popular Nigerian social commentator Oyemyke has reacted to the decision of prominent Igbo businessmen — including Obi Cubana, Cubana Chief Priest, Zenco, and Enviable — to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

The public show of support has sparked debate, particularly given ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s political space and Lagos’s significance as the country’s commercial capital.

“They’re Businessmen, Not Politicians”

Weighing in on the controversy, Oyemyke defended the businessmen’s stance, arguing that their loyalty is shaped by economic reality rather than ethnic or partisan sentiment.

“If you were in their position, would you abandon Tinubu and support someone else? These are Igbo businessmen who left their cities to build their lives in Lagos, a city shaped by Tinubu. Their investments are in Lagos. They’re businessmen, not politicians,” he said.

His comments suggest that business interests and stability often influence political alignment, especially for entrepreneurs whose wealth is tied to a particular economic ecosystem.

Lagos as a Strategic Economic Base

Lagos, widely regarded as Nigeria’s economic nerve centre, has long been associated with Tinubu’s political influence, dating back to his tenure as governor. Many high-profile entrepreneurs have built empires within the state’s hospitality, nightlife, real estate, and logistics sectors.

Analysts say endorsements from influential business figures underline how economic considerations can intersect with political decisions, especially in a state where infrastructure, policy continuity, and government relationships directly affect private enterprise.

As conversations around 2027 intensify, the intersection of business loyalty and political support is likely to remain a focal point in public discourse.
