“It was tiring and depressing” – Liya Opens Up on Leaving Davido Music Worldwide

Liya Opens Up on Leaving Davido Music Worldwide

Nigerian singer Liya, born Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, has revealed that her decision to leave Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) was motivated by a desire for personal and professional growth.

Liya, who made history as the first female artiste signed to the label owned by Davido in October 2020, officially exited the label in 2023.

Speaking during an interview on Wahala with Josy Anne, she disclosed that her time at the label came with emotional challenges that affected her wellbeing.

According to the singer, the period was marked by depression, exhaustion, and health struggles, which ultimately led her to make the difficult decision to step away.

“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artist.

“It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself,” Liya said.

She also addressed the criticism she faced while signed to the label, noting that many people misunderstood her situation and labeled her as unproductive.

“They called me names people saying she’s lazy, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything,” she said.

Liya further revealed that the challenges she experienced during that period affected her activity on social media, explaining that she did not personally manage her Instagram account for over two years, leaving it in the hands of her manager.

Despite the difficulties, the singer expressed appreciation for her manager’s patience and understanding throughout the period.

“He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He never pushed me or forced me,” she added.

Liya rose to prominence after joining DMW in 2020, releasing songs such as “Melo,” “Adua,” and “Lakiriboto,” which helped establish her presence in the Nigerian music scene.
