Nigerian singer Konga has claimed he is entitled to 60 percent of the earnings from a song by Burna Boy, alleging that his work was used without permission.
Speaking on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Konga said Burna Boy sampled elements of his music in the song Update without reaching out to him.
According to him, the issue is not just about money but about respect and proper engagement.
“If Toni Braxton is having 60% royalty of Last Last, why can’t he come and meet me first, talk to me?” he said.
Konga was referencing Burna Boy’s 2022 hit Last Last, which sampled a track by American singer Toni Braxton, reportedly earning her a share of the royalties.
He also claimed this was not the first time Burna Boy used his material, alleging that parts of his lyrics and style were reflected in the remix of “Sungba” with Asake, as well as in “Update”.
Despite the claims, Konga said he has chosen not to take legal action for now, revealing that he stopped his lawyers from pursuing the case.
According to him, he still respects Burna Boy’s work and is proud of his contribution to taking African music to a global audience.
However, he added that after Burna Boy declined his request to feature on a remix of his own song Kabakaba, he is now considering sampling Burna Boy’s work without permission as well.
As of now, Burna Boy has not publicly responded to the allegations.
The situation has sparked conversations around music rights, sampling, and how artists handle creative ownership in the industry.
