Nigerian media personality Nedu Wazobia has stirred debate online after saying that poverty makes it difficult for someone to be seen as a role model in Nigeria.
Nedu remarked during a podcast conversation with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, where the two discussed the influence of wealth and social perception in the country.
According to the radio host, financial success now plays a major role in determining who people respect or admire in society.
“You can’t be a role model when you don’t have money in Nigeria,” he said.
In a snippet from the interview shared on his Instagram page, Nedu argued that many people no longer look up to individuals who are financially struggling, regardless of their character or achievements.
He also made a controversial claim about lifestyle trends in Lekki, suggesting that some women living in the upscale area rely on men to support their living expenses.
“Most women wey dey live for Lekki, na men dey pay their rent,” he added.
His comments have since sparked conversations across social media, with some users agreeing that wealth often determines influence in modern society. In contrast, others criticised the statement as a generalisation about women and success.
